The Comic’s Comic has learned that Jay Pharoah, a young stand-up comedian from Virginia’s Tidewater who has a full arsenal of impersonations — including one of President Barack Obama (and yes, he’d likely do it instead of Fred Armisen!) — is just about a done deal to become the fourth new cast member to join the on-air ranks when SNL’s 36th season begins on Sept. 25, 2010.

He’ll be joining Vanessa Bayer, Paul Brittain and Taran Killam as the cast newbies. This would represent the biggest single infusion of new talent into the show since 2001, when Lorne Michaels also hired four new featured players for the 27th season (trivia answer: Seth Meyers, Amy Poehler, Dean Edwards and Jeff Richards).

But what about Jay Pharoah, you ask? His bio says he’s 22, but began working on his impersonations as early as junior high and in local comedy clubs in the Tidewater by the time he was 15. He says he would like to meet his comedy idols, Eddie Murphy and Chris Rock, both of whom rocketed to fame via SNL. Looks like he may get his chance sooner rather than later. Pharaoh flew in to NYC twice in August for screen tests and meetings with Lorne.

I’ve always had an interest in social behavior. Having worked on the editorial side of the publication world for the past seven years, I realize that people in this world tend to assume that certain things are just known. Whether it be information about the latest music/fashion or the current political climate. I meddled with this notion for a while and came to the conclusion that this is true in life, in general. The way this online generation speaks mostly in acronyms and assumes everyone else will understand. Or the way people at my job speak in designer slang.

From the macro to the micro, some of us unintentionally or waywardly act as if we are all on level playing field as far as communication goes.

How detrimental is it to human connectivity that most of us think everyone else knows what we mean. How much day-to-day drama can be avoided if we all started at the base by finding out one another’s method of communication. Not just how we communicate but what the things we communicate mean.

I decided to conduct a little experiment a month back. I began to ask a random-pick of associates/friends what ellipses used in an online conversation meant to them. The responses were wonderful. I learned that what many of us assume to be common knowledge is not that common at all.

The responses via iChat (names have been omitted to avoid judgment and … humiliation):

cyu: “What do ellipses used in an IM convo mean to you?”

sarcasm or you’re transitioning into something else to say

————————————————–

Two things

When the moon passes the sun and earth

and a car company

… are you serious?

that’s an eclipse

… oops

————————————————–

yada yada

or silence

like i dont know what to say

————————————————–

lol I guess it means the person who uses it is unsure what something means

i associate with uncertainty or like “what?”

————————————————–

thinking

or…

fill in the blank

or

oh lord

what miscommunication happened now?

No, I’m really asking. I’m taking a survey.

oh…

————————————————–

hey…

ha!

basically an unfinished thought

or waiting for the other person to get the point of what i’m saying

like, “yada, yada, yada”

when i see … in AIM

i think it’s a lingering in the train of thought especially when it’s at the end of the statement

like “i could go more into detail but you get the point and i should be working anyway”

————————————————–

trying to convey

“what the f&^k are you talking about”

still thinking

or “why would say that”

means an incomplete thought

or something the reader can intuit that doesn’t need to be said

… << that

?

or the shoes?

lolol

huh?!

“…” <<this

i’m so confused

days like this when i am completely drained i force myself to remember that it’s all for a purpose. it’s so easy to feel like a hamster in a wheel in today’s world. constantly working. very little sleep. hustlin’ hustlin’ hustlin’. the light at the end of my tunnel is that i have a plan in place and i am working it. when it needs tweaking, i reassess. i know it needs tweaking when i stop smiling.

when is the last time you asked yourself whether or not you’re merely going in circles with no exit, no conclusion? every now and again it is of the utmost importance to step back and reanalyze your life. revisit your game plan. decide if you are truly happy.

sometime it calls for a complete scrapping of your current map. crumbling it up, tossing it over your shoulder and hitting the drawing board again. whatever map you have, make sure that happiness and peace of mind are not only your ultimate destination but the road you travel to get there. you’ll know when you’re on the right path when you wake up in the morning and you’re excited about the day ahead of you. That’s when you’re on to something.

how’d you feel this morning?

When it comes to this dude and rockin’ well-tailored suits, it’s a wrap…Reynolds. (sorry had a Drake moment)

Ryan Reynolds. He’s by far one of my favorite white boys. And not just because he’s hilarious and easy on the eyes. I find him classy. Neat yet not pretentious. He wears the hell out of a suit but still looks elegant in a cashmere cardigan or crew neck. A shoo-in for this qatalog. Without further ado, If I were a boy…

As part of their training, the volunteers helped run a summer school program for almost 150 students in Kakata where they developed lesson plans, taught in classrooms, issued and graded homework assignments, and administered an exam. The volunteers received language training in Liberian English and a number of local languages including Kpelle, Grebo, Mano, Vai, Gio, Gola, or Krahn.

Peace Corps Response provides opportunities for returned Peace Corps volunteers to serve again by utilizing their skills and experience in places around the world where they are needed the most. Since its inception in 1996, Peace Corps Response has sent over 1,300 returned Volunteers to more than 50 countries.
